Harbor Way Enters First Phase of Redevelopment

Harbor Way, scheduled for completion in 2024, promises to be the very definition of connection, inspiration, and sustainability within the Seaport District.  The design for Harbor Way is a collaboration of three very distinct yet unique groups – WS Development, leading land architect James Corner Field Operations, and world-renowned design consultants Pentagram. The design of Harbor Way has been done so in a way that captures New England’s coast, forestry, and traditional wooden boardwalks.

A lot is on the schedule for this one-third-mile pedestrian promenade. Already unveiled in October 2021, a new green space named The Rocks at Harbor Way offers a memorable open space that the entire city will be able to enjoy. Coming in 2022. Designed by Gensler, this office space will become the home of Amazon and will also provide an additional 60,000 square feet of space for neighborhood retail and public works of art.

The Rocks at Harbor Way is named after 250,000+ pounds of locally sourced boulders that are formally known as glacial erratics and will be located at the heart of Harbor Way. The area will also provide access to “The Singing Trees,” powered by PlantWave, and a 22-foot long community table.

Summer Steps is the creation that will connect Harbor Way to Summer Street and the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. Summer Steps is slated for completion in 2023 and will be a new stair and boardwalk feature for the area.

Also, in 2023, Harbor Way Ice Rink for the Snowport season will debut. Foundation Medicine will also find its home within Harbor Way at 400 Summer Street. The building is designed by Morris Adjmi and will include 30,000 square feet of additional neighborhood retail use, bringing the building’s total to 625,000 square feet.

Rounding out the completion of Harbor Way in 2024 will be One Boston Wharf, designed by Henning Larson. One Boston Wharf will be a 17-story mixed-use building totaling 707,000 square feet, and will be the eventual…
