When Boston’s winter weather first hits, residents often go through five stages of grief in short order. Denial (it’s not that cold), anger (why am I not in a Southern location?), bargaining (I’ll shovel the sidewalk, but then I’m going to eat an entire foot long sub by myself), depression (winter will never end), and finally, acceptance (hot chocolate, ice skating and many indoor activities are actually pretty great).
Kidding aside, whether you’ve lived here your entire life, or moved to New England just in time for winter, Boston’s winter weather can be a real downer if you let it get to you. So with that in mind, here are some tips to keep in mind when that big snowstorm hits.

Pay Attention to the Snow, and Park Accordingly
Parking in Boston can be a huge time robber, but snow adds another factor altogether. If you just moved to New England from a warmer state such as North Carolina or Virginia, you may be surprised at just how much snow is considered “normal” here. But even if you’ve lived in a climate that gets even more snow than Boston — they exist, we promise — you’ll still want to familiarize yourself with local norms and policies. Truth be told; we have been extremely lucky due to the lack of snow the past several years – but our luck will probably run out soon. One thing that is constant about Boston weather is its inconsistency over the past five decades.
There’s an informal tradition of residents shoveling out their usual street parking, and “saving” that spot with some kind of object. Parking is limited in the best of times, so when manual labor is required to make use of what’s there, be respectful of other people’s efforts.
